Art of the Sistine Chapel

Triggerpit has put together a post Sistine Chapel – Incredible Christian art walk-through that gives a nice overview of the organization and artwork of the Sistine Chapel. Above are pictures of some of Michelangelo's work (top) and Cosimo Rosselli's Parting of the Red Sea (bottom).

It is a nice overview of all of the paintings in the Sistine Chapel, what their topics are, and who painted them, as well as having some nice panoramic shots that show how they all fit together.

I have been lucky enough to have visited the Sistine Chapel twice. Once in 1980 (or thereabouts). This was before the restoration of the ceiling. I was impressed, of course, but the sheer effort that must have been involved in painting just the ceiling, let alone all the other art in the chapel. But I was not impressed with the art. It looked, of course, dull.

I returned in the early 90s ('93 IIRC). There was still scaffolding present but the ceiling was all but completely resorted.

What a difference! What beauty!

Majesty vs. drudgery.
